Scenarios 2025

16. People come to the library to disconnect from lives lived largely online

By 2025, a good deal of life’s daily transactions (e.g. shopping, learning, communication) will be accomplished online, but the draw of that ever-connectedness will also be waning. People will desire a return to face-to-face interactions. Libraries will answer this desire by providing entirely tech-free zones, where personal information devices of all kinds are turned off. Within these tech-free zones, library users will find opportunities to engage with other people in games, storytimes, conversation, and other personal interactions.

Main Points:

  1. Libraries have tech-free spaces
  2. Libraries provide spaces and services for off-line social activities — story time, games, etc.

Impact on libraries: 1

Probability: 4

Speed unfolding: Moderate
